뉴스로 영어 공부하기: underpin (지지하다)

개인적으로 이유는 모르겠지만 잘 안외워졌던 단어가 underpin하고 underscore였습니다. 물론 두 단어는 전혀 서로 상관없는 단어입니다.ㅠㅠ 여하튼 이번에 정리하면서 확실히 외워야겠습니다.

 

"어떤 것을 뒷받침하다"라는 뜻으로 under-라는 부분이 있듯이, 아래에 뭔가 탄탄한 근거나 물리적인 지지물체로 받쳐서 지지해준다는 의미로 보시면 되겠습니다. 구글에 아주 잘 정의되어있습니다. "support (a building or other structure) from below by laying a solid foundation below ground level or by substituting stronger for weaker materials."
