뭔가 상황이 좋지 않은 뉴스에 가끔 나오는 단어 같습니다. 발음 한번 들어보겠습니다.

sputter는 원래 뜻은 "(엔진·불길 등이) 펑펑 하는[털털거리는] 소리를 내다 "라는 뜻으로 영어로는 "make a series of soft explosive sounds, typically when being heated or as a symptom of a fault."라고 설명됩니다.

 

뉴스에 주로 나오는 것은 영어 설명 중에 첫번째로 나온 뭔가가 열을 받아서 소리를 내는 것보다는 두번째 어떤 결함의 증상으로 (as a symptom of a fault)으로 소리를 내는 경우가 많이 나오는 듯 합니다. 즉, "어떤 회사의 운영이 잘못되어서 삐걱거린다"의 경우를 생각해보면 될 듯 합니다.
