요즘 많이 보이는 표현 중의 하나가 바로 FOMO인데요. "Fear of missing out"의 약자입니다. 다른 사람들에 비해 자기가 뒤쳐지거나 빠져버릴 것 같은 마음을 가지는 상태를 말하는데요. 부동산 가격이 급등하자 너도 나도 무리하게 빚을 내서 집을 사는 경우나, SNS에 특정 주식에 사람들이 몰려서 급등한다는 Posting을 보고, 다른 이유가 없이, 자기만 기회를 놓칠 것 같은 마음에 매입하는 등의 사례를 말할 때 많이 나오는 표현입니다.

 

구글의 사전적 정의로는 "anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on social media."라고 나오고, 위키피디아에는 좀더 구체적으로 "Fear of missing out is a social anxiety stemming from the belief that others might be having fun while the person experiencing the anxiety is not present. It is characterized by a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing."라고 나오지만 기본적으로는 위에 설명드린 것과 같습니다.

 

SNS로 이런 현상은 더 두드러지게 나타나는 것 같습니다.
