오래 전부터 경제적으로 안정을 달성하고, 빨리 은퇴하고 싶어하는 사람들은 많았었는데요. 요즘 부쩍 FIRE라는 표현이 많이 나와서 찾아보니, FIRE는 Financial Independence, Retire Early의 약어였네요. 이런 삶을 추구하는 세대를 FIRE generation이라고 부르고, 이 운동을 FIRE movement라고 부르기도 하는 것 같습니다.

 

여하튼 네이버에는 "재정적 독립을 이루고 일찍 은퇴하기((일찍 재정적인 안정을 이룬 후 젊을 때 은퇴를 추구하고자 하는 새로운 생활 방식))"라고 나와있습니다.

 

구글에 찾아보니, investopedia에 설명이 잘 나와있네요.

 

" ... a movement dedicated to a program of extreme savings and investment that allows proponents to retire far earlier than traditional budgets and retirement plans would allow. By dedicating up to 70% of income to savings, followers of the FIRE movement may eventually be able to quit their jobs and live solely off small withdrawals from their portfolios decades before the conventional retirement age of 65. ..."

 

여기서 주목할 점은 "extreme savings and investment"인 것 같습니다. Extreme saving은 수입의 70% 까지를 저축한다는 것이고, Investment도 그에 걸맞는 수익률 추구하는 것을 말하는 것 같습니다. 그렇게 해서 재정적 안정을 달성하고, 평균 은퇴 연령인 65세보다 읽찍 은퇴하고, 자신이 만든 포트폴리오에서 조금씩 찾아서 삶을 영위한다고 하니, 사실 마냥 빨리 돈 벌어고 모아서 편하게 살자는 뜻이라기 보다는 자기 희생과 절제를 상당히 요구하는 생활 방식인 것 같기도 합니다.
