뉴스로 영어 공부하기: shambles (난장판)

"큰 혼란 상태" 또는 "난장판"이라는 표현입니다. 비슷한 뜻의 mess에 비해서 많이 접하는 표현은 아닌 듯 하니 알아두면 다양한 표현이 필요할 때 좋을 것 같습니다. 구글에는 "a state of total disorder"라고 확 와닿게 나와있습니다.^^ 

 

어떤 조직이나 집단에서 관리가 되지 않는 상태, 소위 말하는 리더의 영이 서지 않고, 조직원들간에 협업이나, 조화가 이루어지지 않는 상태를 생각해보시면 될 듯 합니다.

 

 

단어 끝이 "s"로 끝나서 복수 단어로 생각하기 쉽지만 기본적으로 shambles는 아래 뉴스 속 예문에서 처럼 단수로 "a"와 함께 주로 단수로 쓰입니다. 단, " ... an economy in shambles ..."와 같이 문장 구조적으로 복수로 바로 쓰이는 경우도 있다고 하니, 사용할 때 문법적으로는 유의해야할 듯 합니다.
