whopper라는 단어는 뉴스에서는 "거짓말"이라는 뜻으로 많이 쓰입니다. 영어로는 "a gross or blatant lie."라는 뜻입니다. 단순한 거짓말이 아니라 gross하거나 blatant한 거짓말이라는 의미입니다. 뜻이 그렇다 보니, tell이나 deliver 등과 함께 쓰여서 tell a whopper 또는 deliver a whopper 라고 쓰이게 되지요.

 

그런데, whopper라고 하면 버거킹 생각나시죠?

 

whopper는 다른 뜻으로 "엄청 큰 것 (a thing that is extremely or unusually large.)"이라는 뜻이 있는데요. 버거킹에서는 그런 의미로 쓰인 것일 겁니다. 뭐, 와퍼 하나 가지고 아쉬울 때도 많긴 하지만요. ㅠㅠ
